  4. that served to create the world of consumer abundance by 
  5. mass production served also to put the highest levels of 
  6. artistic production on a more assured and consciously 
  7. controlled basis. And, as usual, when some previously opaque 
  8. area becomes translucent, it is because we have moved into 
  9. another phase from which we can contemplate the contours of 
  10. the preceding situation with ease and clarity. It is this fact that 
  11. makes it feasible to write The Gutenberg Galaxy  at all. As we 
  12. experience the new electronic and organic age with ever 
  13. stronger indications of its main outlines, the preceding 
  14. mechanical age becomes quite intelligible. Now that the 
  15. assembly line recedes before the new patterns of information, 
  16. synchronized by electric tape, the miracles of mass production
